Films watched this week
I'm falling behind in my quest to watch 50 movies this year! MUST. WATCH. MORE. FILMSSSSS. Actually, if you have recs I'd like to hear them!

Two Weeks Notice - I liked it. Kinda oldschool and I wasn't too sure about the Hugh Grant/Sandra Bullock pairing, but not too shabby.

Enchanted - Cute! I loved the curtains thing and James Marsden.

Down With Love - I liked this at the beginning, but the twist in the plot left me feeling a bit cold/offended, and it was a bit too clever and smug for it's own good. But the performances were great and it has Ewan McGregor. Often shirtless ([info]meganbmoore wanted me to point this out in the comments).

27 Dresses (US) - Cute. I didn't think I would like Katherine Heigl (not that I have anything in particular against her), but I really did, and James Marsden again! I am however not so convinced by Hollywood wanting me to believe Katherine Heigl's character had been a bridesmaid 27 times and was single.

Red Eye (US) - Oooh. This was fun. Cillian Murphy, why must you be so creepy at all the time?

+ 20/50 movies in 2008

Haven't you heard? According to Hollywood, the more attractive a woman is, the less likely she is to find a good guy! If it's a romantic comedy, she'll just take the frst oddball to come along.

(Also, I am amazed you left out all the gratuitous shirtlessness in Down With Love...)

I have duly rectified the problem in the post.

In other news, Jane Austen fanfic novel continues to enthrall me. There was a mugging, a duel over a painting, the heroine posing as a castrato, and the hero suddenly deciding that it was his mission in life to save the heroine from her fate even though he spent the entire novel so far not really caring about what happens to her - beautiful.

Ah. So, normal regency historical. Have you told Britta about it yet?

I see that the regency historical romance genre has much to offer me - I think I've read, like, 2 of them before this? I haven't told Britta yet - she's around for like 5 seconds and then she's gone, no time!!

This is my 100 movies in 2008 list; the ones marked with asterisks are the ones I enjoyed the most. I'd really recommend Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Penelope (sooo adorable), Ratatouille (also adorable), and Rushmore. I guess I should also mark the ones that people should avoid, haha. A few of the movies I've watched have been teeeeeerrible.

Oh, and these aren't on the list because I watched them before 2008, but: Bringing Up Baby, Paris Je T'aime, and Almost Famous.

Ah.... but the whole "plot twist" thing w/"Down With Love" was part of its appeal ;-) You see (and I *never* say this to people, so take this with a large grain of salt ;-))... you're probably just too young to know what it was most like ;-) Basically, the whole thing is a total parody of the old Doris Day-Rock Hudson movies and they always had some stupid, implausible plot twist of how this one knew that that one knew... whatever. I honestly don't remember a lot of the actual story lines of them, but I used to watch those w/my mom when I was a kid (hence the lack of recall!!). SO MUCH of that movie was bits and pieces of those old ones, I *DIED* laughing at the movie, while my hubby just kinda chuckled occasionally ;-) It's a bit like... have you ever seen "Galaxy Quest"? If you know much about, say, Star Trek fans (especially), then how the "fans" knew so much about the series/ship, etc., is soooo much funnier and all than if you only have a passing idea about it all. (Another movie that I was literally rolling on the floor with, and hubby just thought was semi-funny, and for the same reasons! I had to explain to him how some people have actual engineering schematics of the Enterprise drawn out!!)

So, maybe you oughta watch an even older movie and see if it helps "explain" "Down With Love" any better ;-)

Oh, that's probably true - I haven't seen the Doris Day-Rock Hudson films (they were mentioned in the summary for the movie, actually) - and that probably would have helped. On the whole, though, I did enjoy watching it. Very sleek production and fun dialogue at times :)

Hee... that whole thing w/talking on the phone and the split screens actually being innuendo? I don't remember if the old movies had *that* sort of innuendo, but the split-screen thing was *totally* in them all (that I remember anyway). That alone made me crack up ;-) I really only remember bits and pieces of the old ones, but I remembered enough of the "look" of them and all to "get" the movie ;-) It's enjoyable anyway, but I think it does make it where you "get" some aspects of it more if you're familiar w/the old stuff. Although I'm not entirely sure that's enough justification to actually go watch those old ones ;-) (One of my favorite parts: when Ewan and David Hyde-Pierce are talking about socks, and the secretary overhears and passes out from what she *thinks* they're talking about!)

I enjoyed the innuendo and dirty jokes, too... and I LOVED David Hyde-Pierce, he was fantastic.

Even after all the movies I've seen lately, I've only seen one movie on your 50 list: Densha Otoko. I agree, it was a great movie. Did you write a review for it?

As for recs, I really like last year's La Vie En Rose . . I saw it recently and it was a really incredible and moving experience. Anyway, instead of recommending all my favorites to you, are there certain things you like seeing in a movie? Things you don't?

I liked Densha Otoko a lot, but I was trying to plough through all the films I have right now so I didn't review it. I may go back and do that, it's one I think a lot of my flist would appreciate.

Hmm: I'm not that picky with genre, but I don't like films obviously aimed at teenagers (Dude, Where's My Car? etc), mindless comedies or movies that are just basically 2 hours of lame sex jokes. Not that big on Superhero flicks, either, but I don't mind those.

Same, I used to like those kinda movies when I was a teen, but after taking a course on film, I suddenly made the switch to long-winded dramas. ;)

Still recommending La Vie, and last year's foreign movie winner Lives of Others is excellent too. I've only watched two Korean movies so far, "My Sassy Girl" and "Old Boy" which were both awesome but I'm sure you've seen them already. "The Host" is a recent Korean movie I heard was really good, my students kept talking about it.

A few more of my favs that I think you'll like:
- Stranger than Fiction: It's my favorite film ever, and it's a romantic comedy. o_O
- Match Point: a love triangle unlike anything I've seen in dorama
- Once: the movie community is in love with this musical romance, though I question the romance ^_^
- Away from Her: a Canadian take on pure love romances, it's much more realistic than anything I've seen in dorama though. Super duper acting.
- 3:10 to Yuma: Great action flick, the last 30 minutes will have you at the edge of your seat
- The Prestige, Cinderella Man . . you've probably seen these already, though?

( Hm, I think I assumed you were a romance genre fan . ^_^ )

And a few your-mileage-may-vary movies . . some people thought they were boring, but I loved them and thought they were thought-provoking:
- No Country for Old Men
- There Will Be Blood
- Babel

I've seen The Host - it was pretty decent for an action/horror flick. I agree about Away From He, it was very well acted and quite sad. I think I nearly cried a few times. Thanks for the other recs, I'll check 'em out :)

I do like romances but I'll watch most genres if they're presented appealingly to me. I like light-hearted stuff to pass the time, but my favourite films are ones that have emotional impact. Depending on my mood I also like art house films, which I used to watch a lot of.

James Marsden was adorable in Enchantend. Liked him in 27 Dresses too, but he steals the spotlight as Edward. :)

I was forced to watch 27 Dresses against my will and actually ended up enjoying the film. I also fell even more in love with James Marsden during the course of the film, but I guess that's a different matter. If you're looking for another cute chick flick, I'd recommend Music and Lyrics.
