Kung Fu Fighting!
Forbidden Kingdom: the Jackie Chan - Jet Li wuxia-blockbuster. Not a bad movie, actually, made more interesting by the fact that it is a loose adaptation of Journey to the West. Jackie was great, Jet was alright, and Boston Kid, who I thought would severely annoy me, was fairly inoffensive. Most astonishingly of all, Liu Yi Fei was very watchable in it. She's usually such an otherworldly beauty, but I liked her here. It was probably the down-to-earth character and the lack of emphasis on how beautiful she is, and the limited screentime. Li Bing Bing was gorgeous, (definitely a shoutout to The Bride with White Hair) and I wish she'd had a better/bigger role than just token evil girl.

Crow's Zero: Fun, fun movie about the hierarchal rankings of a wild all boy's school brimming with gangs and violence. Oguri Shun plays Genji, a new transfer student who attempts to seize control of the various classes and 'unite' Suzuran High. His main opponent is the undefeated Serizawa, played by my favourite, Yamada Takayuki. Being a manga adaptation, I didn't expect very much from this (in my head it was a kind of Gokusen knockoff), but Crow's Zero was surprisingly good. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a good example of a well-made genre film (harder to come by than you expect).

I must take this opportunity to express that I LOVE YAMADA TAKUYUKI. I always have, and he is the real reason I decided to watch this (Oguri Shun is just icing on the cake). Shun is decent in this, but his character is your typical shounen hero and not very interesting. Yamada, however, is AWESOMELY BADASS. I've seen him in a lot of things (Taiyou no Uta, H2, Tegami, Long Love Letter, Dragonhead), but this is the first time he's played this sort of character. Which is a good thing, really, because he keeps getting typecast in romantic tragedies - not that it surprises me, the guy is an excellent dramatic actor, probably the best in his age bracket. Anyway, prime example of badassery: during the final showdown he PAUSES TO REST in the middle of the fight and sits on a crate while his minions stand around him holding umbrellas. That's f*cking great.

You know, the only thing that I've ever seen him in (somehow) is his supporting role in Lunch no Joou - and then I later discovered that he was considered this drool-worthy actor, and I was a little bit confused. Of course, I'm completely wrong for trying to judge based upon his part in LnJ, but since I avoid most melodramas, I haven't seen him in anything else. Any recommendations?

I personally find him pretty, but in an unobtrusive way. There's a reason I call him Emo Eyes - because he hardly ever does anything non-melodramatic. I suppose you might try the Densha Otoko movie? He plays the nerd in that, I think it's the role that made him famous. I have yet to see it but it's on my list.

Of the stuff I've seen: Taiyou no Uta is a terminal illness drama and Tegami is a tragedy as well, but in a different way (both co-star Erika Sawajiri - I liked her better in the movie though she didn't do very much). Long Love Letter is very good post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama, Yamada is part of an impressive ensemble cast that includes Yamapi, Tokiwa Takako, Tsumbaki Satoshi, Mizukawa Asami and Kubozuka Yosuke as the lead. Dragonhead is another post-apocalypse movie, Yamada plays one of three survivors (Tsumabaki Satoshi is the other) and he goes crazy and tries to kill and etc. It's not bad for what it is but a bit generic as these things go. H2 is about baseball and romance and sucks.

I was just looking at the Wiki page for Long Love Letter yesterday actually, because I wanted to watch something else with Kubozuka Yosuke! I'll add it on my list, then - thank you :D

Haha, the emo eyes radiate even from the banners for his dramas that appear on Wiki pages :O

There's a scene in Taiyou no Uta where he gets thrown into jail for something and he spends the night in a cell, staring up at the moon with watery puppy eyes through the bars of the window... THAT NEARLY BROKE MY EMO METER.

are probably the mahjong scene and the bowling scene. Because. CGI could not have perfected his expression in both. D and I lovingly referred to him as the Dumbass.

He was such a scene stealer - I think he's just a secret comedic genius wanting to burst forth from the trap of That Guy Who is Always in Those Girls Who Die Dramas/Movies...Or Sometimes Dies Himself. He's definitely a good actor though, and I like him more each time I see him - especially when he does cameos in things only tangentially related to him - he did a cameo in the drama adaptation of Densha Otoko as well, but it just makes me think more of him. He's going to be in another movie called 252 with Chiaki Kuriyama that's coming out next year? Tokyograph blurbed it.

Also, did you know he sings? There's a very trippy PV of his out on youtube, with a ganjin assassin guy.

The Human Bowling scene was beyond hilarious. I had no words for it. He is SUCH a scene-stealer, rather like Abe Hiroshi in just about everything. Those are the kind of actors I tend to love :D

I knew he sang but I never listened to /watched any of his music... now I must go do that.
